2026 GHCI Summer STEAM Camp Family Day

May 16, 2026

The 2026 GHCI Summer STEaM Camp Family Day was a tremendous success on Saturday, May 16. The NC State Talley Student Union provided a wonderful atmosphere for the communication exchange. Over 110 people attended, including scholars from eight different North Carolina counties. We are excited to welcome the 44 scholars to the GHCI family.

Scholars and Parents made the following comments:

"I attended the camp last year and it was simply life changing for me. I had never been to a residential camp before. I learned so much about myself with GHCI. This year, I asked my parents to let me go to a boarding school, and next year, I will be attending one in Rhode Island. I gained so much confidence from this program."

"I have been a scholar, jr camp counselor, counselor, and now co-lead counselor for GHCI camps. Since 2017, this has been a part of my life. I continue to learn from Dr. D and Mr. Copeland. They provide opportunities for you to grow during after the camp. It is a wonderful experience and I look forward to helping the scholars grow. Come and be yourself scholars!"

"I just wanted to say thank you all for the truly informational orientation session today. I thought the information was really great. I’m excited about my son’s attendance in the camp. I look forward to receiving the additional information that we need in preparation for the camp."

"What I am hearing today, I have never been so excited for my daughter. Matter of fact, I would like to attend the camp myself. I am just so honored she was selected. This will be a life changing experience for her and our family."

"Thank you for selecting our son. I heard about the program from a friend. I see now first hand when 2 of her kids attending. This will be the first time my son will be away from home. I am totally comfortable with having him spend a week with you."

"What you're hearing, parents, is exactly how they run this camp! My son was a changed young man. During the camp, he learned how to be his own person. The team simply builds on what your kid brings ot the camp, and you will be very pleased with the outcome. Trust them because what you hear is exactly what they do. From the communications, code of conduct, and timeliness, you will enjoy the outcome!"

Our special guest was Ms. Zena Howard, renowned architect known for the following projects: National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, the Durham County Public Health Building, the Motown Museum in Detroit, MI, and the Mississippi Civil Rights Project. She shared key insights and wisdom with scholars. "Explore and push yourselves beyond your comfort zones. The Camp will allow you to do that. When I was your age, I wanted to be an architect and my parents did not know any. They only knew engineers. When I became an architect, there were only 80 Black female architects and today there are over 400. A program like this—WOW—a database with over 60 STEaM professionals to support you! Look at the countless opportunities and support!"

The 8th Summer STEaM camp will begin June 21-26th. Title sponsors are The Burroughs Wellcome Fund, American Baptist Home Mission Societies, and PepsiCo. For more information about GHCI programs, please visit  https://www.ghcinternational.org/programs
