Carole Hopson's Story - Breaking Barriers and Charting New Paths

Carole Hopson shares her inspiring career journey, which includes multiple pivots — from working as a newspaper reporter, to leading training as a Vice President at Foot Locker, and ultimately pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a commercial pilot. After taking her first flight lesson within her 30s, Carole decided to pursue her passion for aviation, however after flight school, the events of September 11, 2001 disrupted the airline industry and put her dream on hold. Nearly two decades after her first flight lesson, Carole began flying full-time for United at age 54. Today, a Captain at United and an advocate for greater diversity in aviation.

Carole’s story shows us that it is never too late to pursue a new dream and that perseverance can help us overcome even the most unexpected obstacles. When women make up only about 7% of pilots and Black women represented less than 1% of commercial pilots, Carole recognized the importance of creating greater access and representation in aviation. Through the Jet Black Foundation, she is working to give back by helping send 100 Black women to flight school by 2035. Her journey and commitment to opening doors for others are a powerful reminder of the importance of representation, opportunity, and pursuing careers in STEM and beyond.
