Cooking with STEM During the CARY ALUMNI KAPPA LEAGUE
September 29, 2025
When we think about food, we don't often think about the number of steps to prepare a meal. In 2012, to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, reading comprehension, chemistry and TEAMWORK, Rick Copeland created a fun activity - Cooking with STEM for creating a waffle. A more fun and novel approach to STEM learning and to one's taste buds. Before one heads to the kitchen, one has to prepare by making sure one has all the ingredients
for a waffle or any meal. What if one adds buttermilk instead of skim milk to the recipe? What if one adds 1/4 cup of allspice instead of 1/4 teaspoon of allspice? How about 1/4 cup of cinnamon when the recipe does not call for it all? Cooking with STEM allows students to see first hand why teamwork is important and that reading is fundamental. After round 1, each team has to use the Engineering Design Process to improve its waffle creation. Then, teams compete in Round 2 to determine the most improved process, and which team has created the best testing waffle. ANYONE WANT TO BE A JUDGE? Cooking with STEM is organized chaos with a purpose and it is a lot of fun!
