Washington DC Travels to Smithsonian and King Memorial

March 13, 2026

Global Health Connections International (GHCI) recently hosted an educational trip to the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, D.C., providing scholars with an opportunity to deepen their appreciation of history and culture. Participants included students from GHCI, the North Carolina State University Math Science Education Network (MSEN), and Kappa Leaguers from the Cary Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. This collaborative experience reflects the ongoing partnership among GHCI, MSEN, and Kappa League to deliver impactful Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) programming for youth across North Carolina.

During this critical time for youth, organizations must continue to build Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) programs. These disciplines are foundational to success in a rapidly evolving, innovation-driven world. Early exposure to STEAM equips young people with critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration skills that are essential across all career pathways—not just technical fields. It is critical that we continue to expose scholars to history, their future opportunities, and programs that will allow them to create a path for themselves. Consistent with those efforts, we must have youth engage with STEAM professionals. During this trip, scholars visited the Smithsonian and met two wonderful, STEM professionals: Mr. Terry Gaskins, CEO Prime Response, Inc. and Dr. Leslie Kingslow, Pulmonologist.

“Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.” - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
