2024 STEM CAMP RESULTS
“The Impacts of Cell Phone Use on

the Human Body”

In its sixth year, GHCI’s Summer STEAM Camp continues to ignite the passion and aptitude of middle school scholars in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). The 2024 program, themed "Preparing for My Future: Full STEAM Ahead," focused on developing a mindset of planning and commitment to excellence. Inspired by the nation's top academics, entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, and other innovators, we were pleased to offer two summer camps. This year’s camp reached scholars in 11 counties across North Carolina. The camp’s academic curriculum focused on understanding “The Impacts of Cell Phone Use on the Human Body.”Professor Eric Saliim, Director of Curriculum, curated an interactive academic program structured around a series of experiments and data analysis designed to explore various physical and cognitive effects of cell phone usage. Scholars engaged in experiments that measured posture, gait, reaction time, and cognitive function both with and without cell phone use. The curriculum emphasized critical thinking and data analysis skills, as well as required scholars to provide public health recommendations on the long-term health implications of cell phone use. Through hands-on experiments and collaborative discussions, students not only learned about the immediate effects of cell phone usage, but also considered broader public health implications and potential preventative measures. This collaborative approach ensures that scholars will have broader perspectives, thereby equipping them with building blocks to engage in the scientific method.
